According to Roland Barthes, one of the key concepts implicit in the medium of photography is its connection with the idea of death.
My artistic practice also derives from my experience with death: I spent five years in cancer hospitals caring for my parents, where
I witnessed death and experienced the transience of life, the trivial character of the human existence and the fragility of this
material world. This experience fundamentally changed my perspective on life and my understanding of reality. As a Chinese-Canadian
artist, my way of thinking is inherently rooted in Eastern culture. Through the lens of Buddhism and Zen philosophy, I gain
insights into life, death and of the nature of being. The development of my artistic practice corresponds naturally to my experience
of death in relation to Eastern existential thought. Through the subject of nature, I use photography, video, installation and
drawing to contemplate a worldview that embraces the concept of transience: of time, of life and of material things. My artistic
practice meditates the idea of change and the passage of time.

Since 2005, my work has been exhibited in Canada, the US, China, and the Netherlands. I am the recipient of a Canada Council

International Residency Grant, the Canada Council Travel Grant, the CALQ Acquisition and Marketing Grant, the Vancouver Mayor’s
Art Award for Emerging Visual Artist, the Joseph-Amand Bombardier Canada Graduate Scholarship from the Social Sciences and
Humanities Research Council Canada, and Concordia University International Mobility Award as well as BC Art Council Scholarships.
I am also the winner of Canadian SnapStar photo competition, one of the winners of the TOP20 Chinese Contemporary
Photographers, and the First-place winner in the Canon Photography Awards (2012). My works are included in many publications
and private collections including the public collection of Museum of Contemporary Art in Shanghai (MOCA).
